Evelyn Maersk is in the Mediterranean en route from Yantian in China to Algeciras in Spain on Maersk Line’s AE7 (Asia-Europe) service. On board are 7,345 containers the equivalent of 12,083 TEU. They were loaded in China and contain a wide variety of goods destined for European consumers.

A new fuel saving record
On this voyage, good planning will enable Evelyn Maersk to save approximately 150 tons (equivalent to 4% lower consumption) of bunker fuel on the voyage from Yantian to Algeciras. It is a new record for Evelyn Maersk. But it does not stop there. As Captain Niels Beyer Nielsen says, “That is also a record to break!” Therefore - a week before the vessel starts the voyage back to China - Second Officer Stanford Cardoz is already busy planning. Not only to ensure a safe passage, but also to identify bunker saving opportunities. In cooperation with operational departments on shore, the voyage and schedule are constantly reviewed with an eye on cutting down any type of slack time. The possibility to depart earlier and/or avoid waiting for berthing upon arrival gives Evelyn better opportunities to sail at economical speeds and save bunker fuel.

What is cooking?
What are the two main topics for discussion onboard a vessel? According to Chief Steward Hedy Lundt, the room temperature and the menu. While the temperature is rather simple to change, it takes a lot of creativity to plan three meals per day for a multinational crew on a limited budget of USD 8-9 per day per person and with no access to fresh supplies for up to 40 days. Fortunately, Chief Stewards are creative. This is also reflected in the way Hedy defines her role on Evelyn Maersk. “I see myself as a kind of Welfare Officer onboard. If somebody is unhappy, I am there, ready to listen and give advice,” says Hedy Lundt.

Saving energy on the move
Waste Heat Recovery is the top feature, when it comes to demonstrating energy efficiency on Evelyn Maersk. Instead of sending all the exhaust gas up the funnel, some of it is reused to make steam and thereby more power to the engine. Although it is not possible to run the system constantly, and especially not at lower speeds such as 18 knots, it can at optimum conditions save up to 10% fuel, explains Second Engineer Poul Henrik Astrup.

Smooth operations
Maintenance is key for ensuring safe and secure cargo operations. Dayman Aldrin Panopio is greasing the semi-automatic twist locks to ensure they function as intended. A twist lock that does not lock or release properly is not only an operational inconvenience, but may also turn into a safety hazard. The lubricant is grease recycled from the steering gear. By reusing the grease, Evelyn saves money and the need to store and offload the grease. A creative, simple, and environmentally friendly solution.

Kuta is very short drive away from the airport, and transportation is readily available to take you from and to Kuta to and from anywhere else in Bali.

Kuta beach is one of the first favorite beaches discovered by tourist. Coconut trees line the sand beach as far as the eyes can see towards the north stopped by the runway of Denpasar’s airport far in the west. The sunset in Kuta is most breathtaking. On the south, the beach is fenced by the airport’s runway, which gives the visitors a breathtaking landing experience. Kuta Beach bustles with tourists’ vendors and locals. It’s the most popular beach in Bali and the island’s number one party zone. The beach stretches as far north as the eyes can see. As short walk away north, the waves will invite to surfing. Rapid development and an influx of visitors haven’t kept the surfers away and Kuta still remains one of Bali’s best surfing beaches and a great place to enjoy a beach lifestyle.

With a long, broad beach on the Indian Ocean Kuta was originally discovered by tourists as a surfing mecca. Long a stop on the classic backpacking route in Asia, back in the 80’s they used to talk about the three Ks (which were Katmandu in Nepal, Khao San road in Bangkok and Kuta). Today Kuta is a showcase of excessive development gone wrong. It is a chaotic, tightly packed mass of concrete and congestion with a run down infrastructure. The beach is overrun with touts and most serious surfers have headed elsewhere.

The 5km long arcing white sand stretch of Kuta is still arguably the best beach front on Bali. The beach is safe, partially clean, well-maintained, although the vendors remain annoying. Kuta is far from the fishing village it once was: it is now a Pacific resort and its streets are clogged with traffic, particularly during the peak seasons of July and August. The northern beach resorts of Petitinget (within the greater Seminyak area) and Kerobokan are in many ways more laid back versions of Kuta, less crowded and more suitable for longer stays. Further north still, Canggu and Dalung offer even more tranquility.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — New Zealand’s competition watchdog said it has initiated court proceedings Monday against 13 airlines, including some of the world’s leading international carriers, alleging “extensive and long-term cartel activity in the air cargo market” over seven years.

The Commerce Commission alleges airlines throughout the world colluded to raise cargo prices in and out of New Zealand via fuel surcharges.

It alleges the airlines entered an illegal global agreement in 1999/2000 under the auspices of the trade organization International Air Transport Association.

“The airlines imposed the fuel surcharges between 2000 and 2006. The allegations also involve a series of regional price-fixing agreements,” commission chair Paula Rebstock said.

“In addition, the commission alleges that a number of airlines conspired to price fix through the imposition of a security surcharge immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks,” commission chair Paula Rebstock said.

Ms. Rebstock said she was confident of success as one airline, in exchange for immunity, would give evidence for the commission while two of the 13 — British Airways PLC and Qantas Airways Ltd. — have agreed to fully cooperate in exchange for halving penalties.

The action follows similar successful actions in the U.S., Europe and Australia.

Ms. Rebstock expects penalties in the “tens of millions of dollars.”

“We do expect these penalties to be quite extensive and we will be arguing this is, if not the most serious cartel we have seen in New Zealand, one of the most [serious].”

Air New Zealand Ltd., likely to be a key defendant, said it would vigorously defend the case to be heard in the Auckland High Court.

The 76% government-owned airline said the commission had failed to discuss the issue over almost three years and it criticized the regulator’s actions as “grandstanding.”

It said it had spent millions of dollars sifting millions of documents and found no evidence of price fixing or cartel behavior.

Ms. Rebstock said the fixing caused extensive harm to the New Zealand economy, affecting revenue of 2.9 billion New Zealand dollars (US$1.58 billion) until it stopped in 2006. New Zealand was disproportionately affected because of its distance from markets, she added.

Qantas said that as soon as it learned it may have breached competition laws its board instructed management to fully cooperate with the NZCC.

Among the other airlines cited are Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., Singapore Airlines Cargo Pte. Ltd. and Singapore Airlines Ltd., Korean Airlines Co. and United Airlines Inc.

Cathay Pacific said it will “vigorously defend” itself against the charges. Singapore Airlines also said that SIA cargo will defend the charges while Korean Airlines said that it supports free trade and fair competition practices.

Seven airline staff from unnamed airlines, including senior executives, were cited as promoting the action and or failing to stop it when in a position to do so.

The commission was working with the U.S. Department of Justice, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the European Commission, all of which had successfully taken similar actions.

The cost of shipping Middle East crude to Asia, which ended a week-long rally yesterday, may decline further as bookings slow, eclipsing demand for ships to be used as storage.

No double-hulled very large crude carriers were booked to ship consignments from Persian Gulf ports to Asia, according to reports yesterday and today from Athens-based Optima Shipbrokers. Rents advanced 51 percent last week, buoyed by demand from oil companies to hire the carriers as storage.

“I don’t think the storage has been enough to really make an impact,” Halvor Ellefsen, a tanker broker at SeaLeague AS in Oslo, said in an e-mailed note today. The supply of ships to collect cargoes at the end of December is “far from tight.”

Japan’s economy contracted 1.8 percent in the third quarter and exports from China shrank last month as a global recession deepened, sapping demand for oil. The Baltic Exchange’s benchmark rate, for Saudi Arabian cargoes to Japan, fell 1.7 percent to 91.73 Worldscale points yesterday.

Worldscale points are a percentage of a nominal rate, or flat rate, for more than 320,000 specific routes. Flat rates for every voyage, quoted in U.S. dollars a ton, are revised annually by the Worldscale Association in London to reflect changing fuel costs, port tariffs and exchange rates.

Each flat rate assessment gives owners and oil companies a starting point for negotiating hire rates without having to calculate the value of each deal from scratch.

A rate of 91.73 points works out at $69,983 a day, according to the Baltic Exchange. Globally the carriers are making $59,466 a day. Frontline Ltd., the largest owner of the vessels, said today it needs $34,700 a day to break even on each of its supertankers, a 10 percent increase compared with August.

SHANGHAI, China - (Business Wire) UPS (NYSE:UPS) today placed in service a new international hub here, improving access to China and speeding the movement of express packages and heavy freight around the world.

The facility is strategically located at the Pudong International Airport, right in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta area, and now becomes the key gateway linking China to UPS’s global network.

It features the largest on-site 24/7 customs inspection area in Shanghai and was built to a unique design that facilitates rapid handling of express packages in addition to heavy freight.

“Everything about this facility was built for speed and reliability,” said Dan Brutto, president of UPS International. “Linked now to our vast integrated transportation network, it opens wider the doors of commerce with China. We believe Shanghai will become an even more attractive business location because our customers will recognize the importance of a world-class UPS facility that provides rapid access to the world.”

Joining Brutto at a special opening ceremony today were Mr. Wu Nian Zu, Chairman and President of the Shanghai Airport Authority (SAA); Derek Woodward, president of UPS Asia Pacific Region, and Richard Loi, the head of UPS China.

Mr. Wu, Chairman of SAA, said, “As the world’s third largest airport by cargo tonnage, and with annual growth of 11.5%, Shanghai Pudong International Airport offers a well-established air network that connects 179 international and domestic cities. The opening of the UPS hub, the first foreign-run hub in the West Cargo Handling Area, further accelerates the implementation of the national Shanghai Aviation Hub Strategy, strengthens the position of the airport and boosts the economic development in Shanghai, the Yangtze River Delta and China.”

The hub features 117 conveyor belts and 47 docking bays and has a package sorting capacity of 17,000 pieces per hour. It also is designed, however, for simultaneous rapid processing of heavy freight, recognizing the different types of business done by importers and exporters in China.

To speed the processing of packages and freight, UPS collaborated with Shanghai Customs to deploy an industry-first customs risk management system at the facility. By merging UPS information with Customs to identify high-risk items for inspection, the system minimizes unnecessary checks and expedites shipment clearance for delivery to recipients.

The dedicated customs area is equipped with advanced technology enabling automated import and export inspection, thereby increasing overall package flow efficiency. With a touch of a button, specific packages can be routed off the main conveyor belts for inspection without impacting the flow of the remaining packages.

With its high sorting capacity, the hub improves delivery times for customers in eastern China by a full day. In addition, pick-up times for express and cargo shipments in Shanghai will be pushed back by one hour and four hours, respectively, so customers have greater flexibility in shipment preparations.

Another industry-first feature is the “Shipper Build Area” at the General Cargo Handling Area, which allows customers to perform on-site packaging before goods are loaded on the aircraft. This eliminates the current industry practice of processing goods at a separate facility, once again saving time. It also improves service to customers who ship items requiring special handling, such as precise instruments.

“China is UPS’s top international priority,” said Loi, the head of UPS China. “We have continued a steady path of expansion here and this latest facility stands as a strong testament to our long-term commitment. We are grateful for the leadership of Chairman Wu and the strong support of the Chinese government, without which today’s event would not have been possible.”

About SAA

The Shanghai Airport Authority is responsible for the operation and management of two international airports in Shanghai — Pudong and Hongqiao. With double-digit average annual growth rates, the cargo tonnage of Shanghai Pudong International Airport accounts for over 85% of the Shanghai air cargo market. According to statistics from ACI, over the last five years cargo tonnage in the Shanghai Pudong International Airport has increased from 1.19 million in 2003 to 2.5 million in 2007, with its global rank climbing from 17th place to 5th place. In August of this year it climbed to third place and cargo tonnage is expected to hit 2.8 million by the end of the year. SAA is committed to implementing the national Shanghai aviation hub strategy to establish Shanghai’s airports as major international cargo hubs. The West Cargo Handling Area of Shanghai Pudong International Airport opened on Dec. 1, 2008. Located on the west side of the third runway at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport, it covers an area of 1.67 square kilometers and consists of a public cargo terminal, a base cargo terminal and a transit center with 38 parking stands for all-cargo aircraft and 2.45 million tonnage of designed capacity.

About UPS

UPS is the world’s largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain and freight services. With more than a century of experience in transportation and logistics, UPS is a leading global trade expert equipped with a broad portfolio of solutions.

The French classification society Bureau Veritas has issued new guidelines for the design of 10,000 TEU + ships

The new guidelines from Bureau Veritas (BV) are aimed at yards designing ultra large container vessels (ULCS) – defined somewhat broadly as ships of 10,000 TEU capacity and above.

Specific attention is paid to whipping and springing, two dynamic phenomena that increase in importance as the ship size increases. A number of studies performed for ULCS show that they cause amplification of the hull girder bending stresses, as well as a measurable contribution to the accumulation of fatigue damage in structural details.

For a typical ULCS, with a length of over 360m, speed of about 25 knots, and large open deck structure, whipping and springing have to be considered at the design stage. Whipping effects can cause an increase of about 20% in the total vertical bending moment and an increase in short-term fatigue damage accumulation by a factor of up to 100% for some head sea conditions.

The increase in effect on the long-term, whipping induced, fatigue damage accumulation has been found to be in the order of 3- 5% for whipping and 4-10% for springing.

BV says that its new guidelines provide a comprehensive methodology to perform this assessment at the design stage, which will help shipyards to build safe and reliable container ships.

The modification work on the three Combi airplanes will take place at Taikoo Aircraft Engineering (TAECO) in Xiamen, China. They previously were operated by Air China.

Air China Cargo currently operates eight freighters, including three 747-400 Freighters delivered new in 2005, 2006 and 2008, as well as two other 747-400 Freighters on lease and three 747-200 Freighters.

Modifications include a side cargo door addition, a strengthened main-deck floor, full main-deck lining installation, provisions for a new cargo handling system and complete revisions to the airplane systems.

Meanwhile, Boeing has set aside US$1 billion dollars to help customers finance orders next year, Dow Jones reported.

Boeing Capital, the company’s finance arm, has worked hard over the past few years to clean up its balance sheet so as to be in a position to offer finance to customers.

Amid further delays to its Dreamliner model, Boeing expects more orders for the long-awaited plane that is tipped to be 20 percent cheaper to operate than previous aircraft of its size.

Boeing is also hoping for orders for other models from Turkish Airline as well as airlines in China, Indonesia and the Middle East.

Boeing admitted that a 57-day strike by machinists, which only ended this week, will cause further delays to the 787 programme - already two years behind schedule.

Meanwhile, Boeing forecast that world air cargo growth will expand at a 5.8 percent annual rate over the next two decades, with worldwide air freight traffic tripling through 2027.

Air cargo traffic will grow over the long term despite current near-term market weakness and worldwide economic uncertainty. The industry has shown strong recoveries from previous economic downturns such as the Asian economic crisis, the 9/11 attacks and the SARS outbreak.

Cargo tends to be at the forefront of increased liberalization of air services, which is a driver of economic growth.

Asian air cargo market growth will continue to lead all global traffic routes. Domestic Chinese and intra-Asian markets will grow 9.9 percent and 8.1 percent per year, respectively. Asia-related markets will experience growth in excess of the global average.
